hoodie for Trayvon

How has your life been these past few weeks?

Has your world been shattered into millions of pieces?

Have you come to the True and Accurate realization that the government and its judicial systems were not created for you?

Have you watched the country of your birth reject you and force you to face up that you are entirely worthless and not worthy of even the air you breathe?

Did you have to go to work, face the world, your neighbors, your daily life with a mask on your face and armor surrounding your heart each and every day since?

Did the president’s words raise your spirits yet make you weep inside because even he was shackled by circumstance and could not say everything he wanted to say?

Do you doubly fear for the Black males and yes even the Black females in your life?

Do you wonder if your Black child will make it back home safely each time he steps outside that door?

Did you march? Have you cried? Did you write? Did you petition? Did you protest?

Has the fabric of your everyday existence changed in any way over the past few weeks?

Did you find out some startling things about the “friends” on your Facebook and your Twitter and your Real Life?

Did you ever lose track of the fact that a child is dead, murdered and went on trial for his life and got no justice? Does it haunt your dreams at night?

Do you have that helpless feeling in the pit of your stomach?

All this and more and yet you had to keep breathing, keep walking, keep working, keep doing, keep stepping, keep that mask plastered on your face, bite your tongue, hide your true feelings because the world around suddenly showed its True Face and you realized that even more loss would rain down upon you and yours if you showed any emotion.

What happens next?

How are you going to live your life?

Did you check in with those of color in your life and showed your simple support by just a kind word, a gesture, an offering to spend time or just simple Let Them Know that you are there for them?

Is this the America you want to live in? Raise your kids in?

Things will only get worse if action is not taken. Silence equals consent. Inaction renders you part of the problem. Stand up. Speak up.

Combat injustice, racism, hatred, misogyny, discrimination, bigotry each and every time they rear their ugly heads in your life.

You live in America. These things touch your life each and every day. Begin to notice them. Speak out. Stand up. Stop the madness.

How Have YOU Been These Past Few Weeks?

To whom it may concern,

I write elsewhere, and have been for sometime, as you probably could have told from my lack of new posts. I do so because I needed a different space to tackle different problems. I write here today because the world has changed, or rather it has been the same, I’ve only lately – past 6 or 8 months – let myself realize the hard truth of how the world actually is. These past few weeks were the clincher.

I had to speak up.

Living well, teaching your children well, and being a good person simply isn’t enough anymore.

Do what you can. When and where you can. Be a part of the solution.

Stand up. Speak up. Take action. No matter how large or small. Do something.

Peace On Earth by Kathleen Scarboro

My birthday wish in these wild and crazy times

Is simply to have everyone I know

And everyone I meet

Take just one thing – Peace – and see how they can create MORE

Of it within their own lives and in the lives of

Everyone they know

And everyone they meet.

Maybe it will grow and spread and change lives

Like that movie Pay It Forward touched so many people

And made people realize

That it is up to us – individuals – to lessen the Hate

Eradicate the prejudice, and for the sake of

All our souls – end the killing and work towards rebuild.

If I could have my wish this year

I would wage Peace on each and every one of you

Peace of mind, Peace of spirit, Peace of heart and soul

Peace in the true sense of the word

A dignity for life on this planet and our responsibility

To know what the right thing to do is

And to do it.

My birthday wish is for Kindness, Compassion and Respect

To be the way we treat each other

Peace be with you

And also with you.

I’m Not Surprised

Although I’m not surprised this happened, I’m still rendered speechless by it and I can’t formulate a coherent response right now. However since I’m slightly late to the conversation at hand, plenty others have been able to speak on this for me – and quite eloquently I might add.

Last month on July 23rd to be exact Kevin Roose in an article for NY Mag titled “Dumb Money: Exposing Silicon Valley’s Stupidest Investments“, had this to say as a kick off intro for his article:

“Some of tech’s clunkers never get off the ground, but others manage to get big, high-profile investments despite having no redeeming qualities whatsoever. (For example, what kind of genius decided to throw $1.2 million at NaturallyCurly, the ‘leading social network and community for people with wavy, curly and kinky hair?’)

Ooopsies My Dear. In case you are wondering Kevin is a white male. I can’t tell you what was going through his mind when he decided to call out NaturallyCurly as an example of a stupid investment. I also think he wasn’t expecting the backlash he did get as evidenced by his “updated” article to include some sort of explanation at the end. Looks like he still has no clue.

The response to his article from BlackGirlLongHair.com includes a rebuttal response from TextureMedia (the company that runs NaturallyCurly.com) CEO Crista Bailey which she says in part (trying no doubt to school Kevin):

“As the straight-haired CEO of TextureMedia, parent company of NaturallyCurly, I thought I would share a few facts about the size and engagement of this market. The first is that approximately 60% of the world has textured hair (waves, curls and coils). That’s a lot of people — close to 80 million textured hair females 18+ in the US alone.

Combined with other brands in the TextureMedia portfolio, NaturallyCurly serves close to 2 million unique visitors every month who appreciate having an engaged community platform to share and learn more about products, stylists, photos, trends, hair health and more.

Women with textured hair spend 3x more on average than their straight-haired peers.”

Poor Kevin shoulda done his homework.

The response to his article from MadameNoir.com says it best I think. Especially the blurb included from Racialicious.com:

“Roose’s thoughtless (and factless) comments illuminate some of the problems in Silicon Valley, namely that the space is controlled by people who are fairly myopic. If this market isn’t something they understand or participate in, it doesn’t exist. And these kinds of perceptions create an environment in the marketplace that disadvantages minority/women fronted businesses seeking investment to create products for their communities.

There is an ignorance around the actual needs, size, and profitability of markets outside of the usual scope. This, on its own, is not a problem – CEOs and Founders can educate investors as to the opportunity and the potential.

But these casual disses and incorrect assumptions poison the well – one would hope that investors aren’t influenced by bad reporting, but these perceptions create a climate where businesses aimed at markets that are not white males are automatically marginalized before they even step into the room.

Worse still, most of these folks will never bother to check and see that their assumptions are wrong. And they will never fully understand why the atmosphere in Silicon Valley doesn’t change.”

Ok maybe now I can toss in my two cents without frothing at the mouth and passing out from sheer blind anger. At least I’ll give it a try.

Oh gosh ok so I totally cracked up when I found out our USA Olympic Team uniforms are made in China. Everyone seemed so surprised and upset. I’m not sure what world they thought they were living in, really people. Just about every damn thing in my apartment (and I’m sure your house too) sports the Made In China label from most of my clothes, electronics, widgets and doohickeys to the keyboard I’m typing this blog post on. As a consumer if I was actually interested in buying only Made In America stuff: I’d be hard pressed to find any. Hence me cracking up at everyone having conniption fits over our US unis. And really, shouldn’t they have done their homework before signing up Ralph Lauren? Just where do you think all of our main American top designers get their stuff manufactured at?? China China China. Wake up and smell the ginseng already.

The only thing I agree on is that the style of the uniforms are FUGLEE. And we really need to not ever again bust out with berets. Its just not us. Baseball cap or sporty Kangol or even a fedora straight out of Smooth Criminal: SOMETHING! Personally speaking I love berets. And I’m a francophile to the max but berets are just not representative of America, they just aren’t. I just hope the sweat suits and other competition wear look better.

That tweet that sent an Olympic athlete home.

Was it racist? Really I’m way too tired to tell. It was in poor taste that much I’m sure of. And I do know that chica was unrepentant of said poor taste up until she figured out she was going to get booted off her team. Then the eloquent apologies started up. Not exactly making points for having good character, racism or no.

Here’s some of my thinking on the subject. I think that po chile done forgot where she was for a sec and thought she could continue on as per usual. Many are saying her punishment was too harsh. Again, I’m way too tired to try and sort that out. I think she backed the Greek Olympic committee into a corner, and whether or not they felt otherwise, I think they ended up having no choice but to send her packing.

I also think that if her Olympic journey had meant so much to her, she’d have been putting her nose to the grindstone and concentrating on her athletics and not sitting around tweeting whatever popped into her head. The second she made it onto her country’s team she was no longer “just herself” and should have been adult enough or smart enough or whatever enough to realize that she needed to adjust her behavior accordingly.

Most of you know by now that for me, it isn’t so much about “saving the planet” but more about saving ourselves. I’d like at this time to take it to the next level. The only thing that is needed in order to make the revolutionary change that is needed for our survival is for each and every one of us to make a very important mind-shift. Once that is achieved, you can go out and spread that mind-shift like a contagion and insure for us not only our species survival but put us back on the path to evolving into our next incarnation.

Because yes, that is the key thing: Due to our current mind-set and the behaviors and actions subsequently taken under that aegis, we have effectively taken ourselves out of the evolutionary running.

The first step is to read the book: Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. Then read it again. Then get everyone you know to read it. You’ve probably heard about books that “will change your life”. Well this is the real deal. If you are able to, make that crucial mind-shift after you’ve read this book.

Here’s a small taste. Most you won’t be able to understand what I’m saying, (and you won’t really until you get ya read on) and that’s ok because I hope that that inspires you to get cracking on that book.

1. Humankind, that is us, that is Homo Sapiens Sapiens is not the pinnacle, the evolutionary end, the end product, the ok we can all stop now cuz OMG we are HERE! (jellyfish anyone?) <–read the book you’ll know what I mean ;)

2. Our destiny is not to own the earth, or conquer nature, or to erradicate, subjugate anyone or anything that gets in the way of our “progress”.

3. The world was not created to be our oyster. Meaning the planet was not created for us to use as we see fit.

4. We were not created to be the rulers of the earth.

I’ve always been a feminist. I had to. I was the only girl with three male siblings. I was rocking the Girl Power thing before it was hip and cool and mainstream. So I have a very acute “spider sense” when it comes to discovering all things misogynistic in the world I live in. Right now, sorry to say that particular world is physically narrow – meaning I don’t go anywhere, don’t do nothin – but on the flip side my mental world has several expansive outlets. Books and Film mostly right now. For this article, I’ll stick primarily to movies and TV shows.

First let me set the scene. Little things add up to a lot. That’s why I can’t dismiss the little things. Those are actually the things that set my spider sense tingling the most actually. They are the gateway to things most horrible and wrong. Some of you might laugh at some of the next things I’m going to say – maybe dismiss them as the rantings of some rabid feminazi or whatever that word is. A word I find rather distasteful to put it mildly. When we fight for the lives of our daughters, sisters, and mothers and dare to raise our voices and our opinions we automatically become fascist genocidal dictatorial jack booters? Donne moi une Grande BREAK s’il vous plait, ok?

Why must we be the ones to do all the teaching? I’m struggling through some tough stuff right now and I tell you I’m just plain tired. I’ve asked myself this question often enough during my life and I’m officially figuratively – and literally perhaps too – stepping down from the teaching pulpit.

See its always women who have to do the teaching about how people are supposed to treat women. Its always the brown people throwing multicultural seminars and events. I think its high time and well past the time that those that are doing the mishandling and oppression step themselves up and start taking responsibility for teaching what is the right thing to do.

I know there are puh-lenty of men out there who don’t mistreat women, who don’t consider women to be second class citizens, who don’t agree with policies like unequal pay for equal jobs etc and so on. But that is NOT enough. You need to step up and take it further. It is not enough to simply exist on the side of what is good and right. It is time to actively teach your sons these things and make sure they understand them, and know that they too need to stand up in turn and keep the cycle of education and action going forward.

So yesterday I’m shopping at my local dollar store. Using one of my many canvas shopping bags – which this store also sells for us to use. Heck even the 7-11 stores have those available now too. (tho they feel a lil polypropylene made to me – see end of post for more on that). I happened to have been tired and achey from my (almost) daily walk and other things that made my mood ick (won’t go into those right now) so that I wasn’t paying attention to the young woman who was ringing up my purchases. I had laid my canvas bag down on the counter where normally things are bagged, and was digging into my wallet for my cash.

Truthsense is a word and a concept I got from one of Orson Scott Card‘s novels. It gave me a name for that feeling when I know, absolutely know that something is Right and True. I think we all have that Truthsense inside of us. That moment when things just click together and a big neon sign lights up in your mind with the words: Yep, Dat Iz Da True.

I’m sick, feverish and generally feeling like I need a vacation somewhere tropical and warm. So to cheer myself up I decided to put together a list of the fabu eco-electric-green-hybrid vehicles that are out there RIGHT NOW for you to check out.

I tried to avoid listing concept cars, because really people: we need this stuff off the drawing board and in our driveways YESTERDAY. No shilly. No shally. Just DO IT.

They are in no particular order or anything, I’m way too miserable for ordered coherence. I’m just saying stuff and posting links if I gottem. You decide which when its time for that new car. Ok.

Funny Sometimes how things go together. How signposts serve to tell you that you’re on the right path. Or the wrong one.

Where the heck have I been and what have I been doing these past six months?

Funny Sometimes how I’m so not going to relive the past six months for ya! Suffice it to say its not been especially pretty.

I’ve decided to write today because I’ve very tired and Teh Kitteh Catz did the Stomp On Momma’s Head To Wake Her Up At The Crack Of Dawn thing and I figured why not?

So I’ve updated a few things, approved some comments and I’m gonna include a mini-rant here today to kick off a New Page I’ve added to this site.

Mini-Rant: How Netflix Nearly Killed Itself

Some of you may know I’m a huge Netflix fan. I mean really – what’s not to love for the agoraphobic recluse? Movies streaming right here on my computer stream and DVDs sent right to my mailbox in those fabu signature Red Netflix Envelopes. (I swear I’ve developed a Pavlovian Response whenever I see em in my mailbox hahaha!)

I love movies. I say that like I’m the only one on the Planet who loves movies. But its true: I love them the way I love books. And Fam and Friends will understand exactly what I mean by that. However,  I rarely see movies when they come out in the theaters – I’ve tossed my cable TV, the place I would usually see ads for up and coming flicks. So basically I got no clue really. But that’s neither here nor there. At least for the rant at hand.

I’m Vaping, Dude

I’ve had a lot bottled up and have about 12 blog posts lined up in my mind… but hey these days I do what I can when I can.

This post had to be done in order to mark down the when and where of me starting (again!) down the road towards a nicotine free life.

The plan has been (for awhile, actually) to start out by hopping off cigarettes and on to ecigarettes – electronice cigs – and go from there.

The shooting at the holocaust museum and the subsequent reactions have reverberated around the world and back again. I had some pretty strong feelings about it myself naturally; and I even chastized CNN for concentrating so much on the killer and notsomuch on the victim(s) and even the museum and what it stands for.

My buddy Rick Sanchez (who’s show on CNN coordinates nicely with my lunch hour) put forth the idea that we should at least focus a bit on the shooter, so that we could learn about what makes him tick, how he came to be able to do what he did etc whatever; I guess so we might educate ourselves?

Ok, no see. First of all. America has a pretty sick history with glorifying our bad guys. I just did not want to see this idjit getting equal press with the good guys. Especially because his life was initially saved by Black EMTs and though listed as being in critical condition, he just might pull through to reap the benefits of a higher public profile. I’m just sayin, like. When and where do we draw the line?

I’m just saying, like.

Whether you’re a disgruntled Democrat or a rebellious Republican…

You must understand that Barack Hussein Obama is not messing around.

What he envisions for America will come true.

If you do not understand what I’m talking about, take a gander at this guy’s life story. This human being did not get to where he is by accident. Whatever he wants in his life: he gets.

Whatever he invisions for himself, his family, our nation: will come to fruition. Mark my words.

I’m calling it as I see it, and if it turns out I’m wrong, then I’ll own up to it.

But I’m not wrong.

And you will see.

When I reach a point of ouchyness I am lucky that certain things come into my life to help me get back to The Real Me. I have always believed that human beings are here to be happy. The lot of mankind is not to suffer. So when I’m suffering I tend to get caught up in a loop. But like I said lucky for me: I get what I need when I need it.

As I’ve been packing up my library in readiness to move, I get to visit with books that I haven’t read in awhile. I have actually been searching for one particular book: Stranger in a Strange Land; but have yet to find it. (most likely I’ve already packed it up!) Lately I’ve been in a turmoil about many things link with my up and coming move and I have reached out to get help sorting it out. But until my next therapy appointment, I have to figure out how to get through each day.

And wow! As I was helping Teh Kitteh find her favorite toy I unearthed Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach. You may know him by his singular book Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Both books are here on my books list too.

So I sat down and decided to read this book. I got to remember that so much of this book was very Buddhist and I also got to remember how much I enjoyed testing my mind in trying to grasp the principles. And since I have last read this book, I have encountered The Secret (also listed here) and I was struck by how similar many of the concepts in this book were to those in The Secret.

Like I have listed the Earthseed phrases, I will list here the phrases that are discovered in this book’s Messiah’s Handbook Reminders for the Advanced Soul.

While you may not get the full power of these phrases, they fit together with the storyline of the book, for those that have read this book will understand why I still want to share them :)

I have bolded the phrases that rang like a morning bell in my soul
